Mineral exploration in Australia is going gangbusters right now.

Keeping up to date with industry news is challenging when your plate is already full. We get what that’s like, so we’ve put together this quick overview of five future-focused tech startups that the CorePlan crew met at Future of Mining that you need to know about, delivered in under five minutes of reading time.

So, take five and get the ‘need to know’ now so you can get back to the important stuff.

Fleet Space Logo

Fleet Space’s Exosphere

Imagine being able to understand what lies deep underneath the Earth’s surface before having to drill a single metre. With Fleet Space’s Exosphere, it’s possible.

Based out of Adelaide, Fleet Space’s Exosphere product uses real-time ambient noise tomography to conduct mineral exploration activities up to 100 times faster than traditional methods. The system works using a combination of small Geode sensors in an array and low earth orbit satellites to deliver near-real-time 3D data visualisations to find critical resources and create highly targeted drill programs.

With ExoSphere you can dramatically speed up mineral exploration processes and it looks to be an absolute game changer for the industry.

OffWorld Logo

Offworld’s mining robot fleet

One small step for man, one giant leap for robot-kind? The team at Offworld are working to make humanity’s dreams of space colonisation a reality. And it all starts right here on Earth with the mining industry.

Offworld plan to teach robots how to endure the tough conditions of space by using the mining industry as the ultimate interstellar testing ground. By exposing the robots to the harsh conditions of underground mining, it’s hoped that they’ll be better prepared for their future galactic journeys, where they’ll mine on the moon, asteroids and even mars.

One Passport Logo

OnePassport: people management made easy

People are your most important asset. And, in an industry like mining, there’s a lot of paperwork attached to your people.

OnePassport is a Victorian startup with the goal of making the lives of administrators working in industries with high compliance requirements, like mining, a little bit easier.

It’s a digital risk management system for all your workforce compliance needs, including OHS, staff records, registrations and permits, employee training and development records and more.

RadiXplore: Google but for tenements

Did you know that, in Western Australia alone, there are 25 million pages of exploration reports (within scanned images of pdfs) spanning 150 years within the government’s WAMEX data repository? Until now, explorers have had to manually comb through this paperwork, relying on their expertise and a healthy dose of luck to find new opportunities.

Enter RadiXplore - an AI platform that understands geological terminology. It has digested all publicly available mineral exploration reports in Australia, including scanned images of handwritten core logs so that, rather than a lifetime, it only takes a few seconds for geologists to search millions of pages of exploration reports.

Every report is spatially tagged allowing users to perform AI-assisted exploration in a manner which was not possible before. And the results have been profound. CEO of RadiXplore, Russell Menezes, says “our customers have either made discoveries or identified opportunities which have increased their market caps between $20-30 million.”

“Our vision for the minerals sector is to help mining companies find critical minerals essential for the world’s global energy transition. With the demand for clean energy technologies predicted to surge over the coming decades, the supply of critical minerals like copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements will be crucial. RadiXplore can intelligently and efficiently plough through millions of pages of reports collated over the last two centuries and find hints to locations for unrecognised critical mineral projects.”

RadiXplore is currently working on building its global, unified database of unstructured mineral data across Australasia, Africa and America.

Urban.io: IoT sensors that keep your team safe

Last but definitely not least, Urban.io is here to help make mining safer and more efficient by replacing manual inspections with Internet of Things sensors that do the job for you.

Urban.io’s sensory devices are designed to eliminate the risks of sending people into dangerous or difficult working environments to monitor equipment and data. They’ve developed twelve smart sensors for use in remote locations or hard to reach places that can be monitored offsite from within the urban.io app. Capture data such as temperature, pressure, vibration, current, humidity, motion, moisture, meter count and others without ever having to connect to a local area network or WiFi hotspot.

Mining industry use cases include monitoring backup generators, conveyor pulleys and motors, pumps, overflow pits and many others.
